Ryo Kubota is Chairman, President, and CEO of Acucela Inc. Acucela is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that specializes in discovering and developing novel therapeutics to treat and slow the progression of sight-threatening ophthalmic diseases affecting millions of individuals worldwide.
Prior to founding Acucela in 2002, Dr. Kubota worked in the ophthalmology field, including serving as a faculty member at both Keio University and the University of Washington School of Medicine. He holds an MD and a PhD in medicine from Keio University. Since 2008, Dr. Kubota has been a director of the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington. In 2014, Dr. Kubota was appointed to the National Bureau of Asian Research Board of Directors, and a visiting professor at School of Medicine, Keio University. He is also a Foresight Advisory Group Member, Department of Pharmacology, Case Western Reserve University. In the course of his work at Keio, Dr. Kubota discovered a glaucoma gene, myocilin, which earned him the Suda Award. He has completed the Harvard Business School Executive Education leadership and strategy program and was selected as one of the Nikkei Business 100, Nikkei Business Magazine’s inaugural list of the most influential people in Japan’s future. He was also selected as one of the most inspiring people in the life-science industry by PharmaVOICE.
Trevor Rubel brings deep industry credentials to his advisor role, with both technology start-up and global payments & lending platform experience. Trevor joined CareCap in January of 2014 to design the architecture for payment plans on the CareCap platform and to establish pay-industry relationships. Since effectively completing the build early in 2015, Trevor has transitioned to becoming a member of the Board of Advisors.
Prior to CareCap, Trevor was EVP of Strategy, Product and Corporate & Business Development at Bank of America Merchant Services, the nation’s largest electronic payments provider. Prior to that, Trevor was at First Data where he served in several key positions from CTO and GM of Information Services, to SVP of Product for First Data International. He came to First Data in 2007 through the acquisition of Intelligent Results, an industry-leading analytics & decision management company that he was instrumental in building.
Trevor is a technologist with an uncanny business and marketing sensibility. He is adept at delivering a product roadmap that ensures an optimal customer experience. Trevor is a venture partner at Industry Ventures and an enthusiastic, if not talented, lacrosse player.
